    Portrait of John Schultz, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1861-1865. Photograph dated approximately 1865.

    Biographical Information

    Seventh Jesuit president Rev. John Schultz was born February 2, 1816 at Niedermorschwiller, Upper Rhine. He entered the Society of Jesus in Switzerland on October 7, 1837. He arrived in America in 1848 and was ordained in St. Louis, Missouri in 1849. In the 1850s he worked among Potawatomi Indians at St. Mary’s Mission, Kansas. After his term at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio, (then known as St. Xavier College), he became vice-president of St. Joseph's College, Bardstown, Kentucky. He was later stationed in Chicago for thirteen years, spending most of his time on the missions. He died August 25, 1887 while serving as spiritual father in St. Louis, Missouri.
