    Portrait of Maurice Oakley, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1856-1861. Photograph dated approximately 1861.

    Biographical Information

    Sixth Jesuit president Rev. Maurice Oakley (formerly Maurice Van den Eycken) was born December 21, 1814 in East Flanders, Belgium. He came to America in 1834 at the invitation of Jesuit Missionary Father De Smet. He entered the Society of Jesus at Florissant, Missouri on February 2, 1835. He was ordained in 1842 and was appointed president of St. Charles College, Grand Coteau, Louisiana the next year. After his term at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio (then known as St. Xavier College) he returned to St. Charles College where he stayed for four years. The rest of his life was devoted to parochial work in Chicago, Illinois where he died August 9, 1887.
