Portrait of Walter H. Hill, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1865-1869. Photograph is dated approximately 1869.

Biographical Information

Eighth Jesuit president Rev. Walter H. Hill was born January 21, 1822 near Lebanon, Kentucky. He graduated from St. Mary's College, Kentucky in 1843 and then taught for five years at his Alma Mater. He entered the Society of Jesus February 3, 1847 and four years after his ordination was appointed president of Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio (then known as St. Xavier College). He taught philosophy for thirteen years in St. Louis, Missouri and was pastor for twelve years in Chicago, Illinois. He spent the last ten years of his life in St. Louis, Missouri, where he died May 17, 1907. (Sources: Xavier Athenaeum, April 1916; Jesuits of the Middle United States, 1938)
