Abstract

In a medical context, x-ray computed tomography (CT) is used to image patients and provide insight into a patient’s condition. For CT, x-rays, a form of electromagnetic (EM) radiation, are used to image the patient from many different angles. These images, or slices, are then pieced together to reconstruct a 3D image that can be used to diagnose the patient. Using the XR 4.0 X-ray Expert Set, CT scans of various objects were obtained to study the scanning and image reconstruction process. These reconstruction images are based on a grayscale, and this grayscale reveals insight into the type of material the x-rays have passed through. Using ImageJ software, these grayscale values can be measured. In a medical application, these grayscale values correspond to bone, soft tissue, internal organs, blood, or other materials, and these are used to diagnose internal issues. Windowing also comes into play with analyzing the images as selecting a proper window allows for distinction between shades of gray that would otherwise appear indistinguishable.
