Abstract
Star and planet formation are known to occur within our galaxy in regions of gas and dust known as embedded clusters. The FUV light from the most massive stars within these clouds ionizes the disks of gas that surround forming stars, which in turn impacts how planets form within these disks. This project calculates the total FUV flux that bathes the stellar disks within embedded clusters via simulations. Specifically, stars are randomly placed within a spherically symmetric cluster and are randomly assigned a mass drawn from a standard initial mass function. The total emitted luminosity of the most massive stars in the cluster is then determined through an observed luminosity-mass relationship. Once the total luminosity and distance between stars is calculated, the total flux impinging on each member of the cluster is then determined. This simulation and data can be used to aid in studying the effects of FUV ionization for future projects.
