Capstone Abstract

The capstone is composed of projects in two nontraditional community sites: Shelterhouse and Heart of Northside.

At Shelterhouse, four projects were completed.

(1) Research Study: A research study examined the impact of in-home occupational therapy services on recipients of the Rapid Rehousing program to support maintaining housing. Results revealed enhanced self-efficacy among clients and improved access to relevant resources. However, several challenges were experienced throughout the 16 weeks, including scheduling conflicts, delays in IRB approval, and varying levels of client participation

(2) Housing Form: Developed to assist Shelterhouse clients and caseworkers in completing housing applications.

(3) Resource Guide: Created to improve the occupational engagement of Shelterhouse clients.

(4) Role of Occupational Therapy: Detailed the role and benefits of hiring an OT.

At Heart of Northside, the creation of a project list focusing on the promotion of health, wellness, and education. This list was used to form collaborative partnerships with four Xavier University departments, including Occupational Therapy, Digital Marketing, the College of Nursing, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Findings: This experience emphasized the role occupational therapy plays in nontraditional settings and the ways community partnerships can enhance student education, foster professional development, and maximize community impact through structured initiatives.
