AI in the Writing Classroom: Uses, Perceptions, Effects, and Solutions
Start Date

Abstract
This project examines the increasing role AI has in writing classrooms. More specifically, it focuses on how higher education students perceive AI and the role it plays on their writing, but also how they specifically use it, whether they view it as a net positive or negative, and whether it increases their awareness when it comes to academic integrity. This topic matters because AI is a technology that is growing faster than ever, and has had a significant effect on learning environments, and specifically writing, over the past few years. To investigate this issue, I use data collected from a survey of students at Xavier University, as well as secondary research to support my conclusions. The data collected uses both quantitative and qualitative data to find out students’ awareness and feelings towards AI, whether they find it useful or not, and how it changes their outlook on academic integrity. At this stage, I expect the project to show that students find AI as a helpful tool but still have some concernsabout the ethics of it. Overall, this research contributes to understanding that AI is having an increasing effect on student learning, and will not be going away any time soon.
