Abstract

Residents can often display symptoms of depression due to loneliness when staying in long-term care facilities. The purpose of this study is to better understand whether residents in facilities that offer more frequent and socially engaging activities experience lower levels of depression. Data will be collected from 12 long-term care facilities selected at random within Southwestern Ohio. Information on depressive symptoms will be obtained from Medicare Compare, while activity calendars from each facility will be reviewed to identify the types, frequencies, and structures of activities offered. Results will be shared to examine the relationship between activity participation and depressive symptoms among residents in long-term care facilities.
