Abstract

This project will focus primarily on book banning and censorship as an increasingly pertinent issue in our American society, as there has been an unprecedented influx of literature banned since 2021. As a result, libraries and teachers alike are required to change their curricula, not only because of the books themselves, but also because of the general subject matter the literature covers, including culture, identity, and ethnicity. These mandates have also sparked debates and raised concerns about the impact on student learning and their understanding of the world, which are limited by censorship tactics such as the aforementioned book bans. Therefore, my research will more specifically cover the sociocultural impacts that book bans may have on students. This is an effort to analyze current effects and future issues that may arise as school book bans increase nationwide. My research, drawn from public data, will examine these impacts by analyzing current effects and potential future issues as school bans increase nationwide. This research contributes to the growing analysis of censorship and to measuring its detriment as it pertains to societal progress, an issue more pressing today as book banning is on the rise.
