Collection Information

The Xavier University Photographic Negative Collection contains photographic negatives that University Archives selected for reformatting and digitization by the Northeast Document Conservation Center in 2007.

The images document the academic, athletic, and cultural life of Xavier University from 1889 to the 1950s, with the bulk of the images dating from the late 1930s to the late 1950s. There are images of intramural sports (basketball, volleyball, handball and bowling among others); intercollegiate golf, boxing, and baseball; special events; awards and presentations; faculty; alumnae and alumni organizations and events; student organizations such as the Masque Society (theater); and student classroom experiences. The collection also includes images of the Evening College, which served adult students, and commencement activities. The majority of the collection likely originated from Xavier's Office of Marketing and Communications, but exact photographer information is unknown. Most of the individuals in the images are unidentified. To view the entire collection, please contact University Archives and Special Collections staff.
