Portrait of John Blox, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1847-1848. Photograph dated approximately 1848.

Biographical Information

Second Jesuit president Rev. John Blox, SJ, was born January 17, 1810 at the Diocese of Mechlin, Belgium. He was one of a party of five who came to America in 1832. He entered the Society of Jesus in White Marsh, Maryland on November 5, 1832. He was appointed pastor of St. Xavier Church, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1845. After his short presidency at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio (then known as St. Xavier College) he returned to the Maryland Province. He died November 27, 1860 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
