Portrait of Edward A. Higgins, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1874-1879 and 1885-1887. Photograph dated approximately 1879.

Biographical Information

Eleventh and sixteenth Jesuit president Rev. Edward A. Higgins was born December 23, 1839 in Carlow, County Carlow, Ireland and came to America with his parents in 1849. He studied at St. Aloysius College, Louisville, Kentucky and St. Joseph’s College, Bardstown, Kentucky. He entered the Society of Jesus in Florissant, Missouri in 1854 and was ordained in 1869. In addition to his two terms at Xavier University (then known as St. Xavier College), he was also president of St. Ignatius College, Chicago, Illinois and St. Mary’s College, Lebanon, Kentucky. He was provincial of the Missouri Province from 1879-1882. He died December 4, 1902 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Source: Jesuits of the Middle United States, 1938)
