Description

Portrait of Henry Moeller, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1884-1885. Photograph dated approximately 1885.

Biographical Information

Fifteenth Jesuit president Rev. Henry Moeller was born January 5, 1847 in Covington, Kentucky. He began his studies at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio (then known as St. Xavier College). He entered the Society of Jesus at Florissant, Missouri February 10, 1867. He continued his studies at Woodstock College, Woodstock, Maryland and was ordained June 1880 in Woodstock. He was the first alumnus of Xavier University to become its president. He was also president of St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri and provincial of the Missouri Province from 1905-1907. He served as spiritual director of the Jesuit community at the University of Detroit and died in Detroit, Michigan on December 20, 1915. (Source: Jesuits of the Middle United States, 1938)
