Portrait of Michael O'Connor, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1897-1901. Photograph dated approximately 1901.

Biographical Information

Nineteenth Jesuit president Rev. Michael J. O'Connor was born July 31, 1862 in Chicago, Illinois where he attended St. Ignatius College. He entered the Society of Jesus August 2, 1877. After leaving Xavier University (then known as St. Xavier College) he served as vice-president of Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. Later he served as associate editor of "America," the Catholic weekly, and treasurer of that publication. He was also pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church, St. Louis, Missouri.
