Portrait of Celestin J. Steiner, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1940-1949. Photograph dated approximately 1949.

Biographical Information

Twenty-seventh Jesuit president Rev. Celestin J. Steiner was born February 7, 1898 in Detroit, Michigan. He studied at the University of Detroit, Detroit, Michigan. He entered the Society of Jesus at Florissant, Missouri in 1918 and after studying abroad he was ordained in Holland. Before his term at Xavier University he was president of St. Xavier High School and after his term at Xavier he was appointed president of the University of Detroit in 1949. He died October 15, 1971 in Detroit. (Source: To See Great Wonders, 2006)
