Portrait of Paul L. O'Connor, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1955-1972. Photograph dated approximately 1972.

Biographical Information

Twenty-ninth Jesuit president Rev. Paul O'Connor was born August 10, 1909 in Joliet, Illinois. He obtained his BA from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio and MA from Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois. He entered the Society of Jesus at the Sacred Heart Novitiate, Milford, Ohio in 1929. He completed his studies at West Baden Seminary, Indiana and was ordained in 1941. He served as Dean of Freshmen at the University of Detroit, Detroit, Michigan and served in the Navy Chaplain Corps during World War II. As president for 17 years he was responsible for erecting 10 buildings. He died September 10, 1974 while serving as chancellor of Xavier University.
