Letter from F.P. (Frederic P.) Garesché, S.J., who was a member of the St. Xavier College Faculty in 1849, to Rev. Fr. Dierckes, S.J., (Rector of St. Xavier College) in 1904 regarding an 1849 student resolution and consequent vow to order and install crowns for statues of the Blessed Virgin and Child should the students be spared from cholera. The letter was written in 1904 when the crowns were repaired.

Resolution for a Student Vow to the Blessed Virgin for Protection Against Cholera

Handwritten resolution recorded by St. Xavier College students resolving to pay for and make two golden crowns to be placed on their respective images in the chapel of the sodality of the Blessed Virgin should the students be spared from the cholera epidemic, which swept through Cincinnati in summer 1849. An addendum appears at the bottom of the page dated December 7, 1904 noting that the crowns had been repaired and beautified in honor of the Golden Jubilee of the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1904.

Student Vow to the Blessed Virgin for Protection Against Cholera

Handwritten vow to "Holy Mary, ever Virgin Mother of God" pledging to "procure two golden crowns, one for thee and one for thy Divine Infant" as a "perpetual memorial of thy Mercy and of our Gratitude" should they be protected from the "danger to which we are exposed during the prevalence of the dreadful sickness with which it has pleased Almighty god to afflict the earth" and should "none of us fall victim to the Cholera at this season." The individual professing the vow on behalf of himself and his fellow students of St. Xavier College is Cheri Nogues. The vow is dated as the Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul, 1849, which is celebrated on June 29.

Handwritten ledger containing student account information for tuition and board, 1847-1852, organized alphabetically by last name. The majority of the boarding students represented in this account book came from southern states and the accounts are generally with their guardian or parent. News clippings of transportation lines (railroads and steamboats) are found toward the end of the volume pasted over accounts. Ledger recording the financial transactions of St. Xavier College and the Jesuit community in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1842-1844. The account book shows the receipts (mainly tuition payments) and expenditures made by the college (as indicated by "contra") for wages, labor, supplies, travel, services rendered, and donations. The ledger documents events of interest such as the travel of President Father John Elet, SJ, and others to and from St. Louis, Missouri. The St. Xavier College Student Registry, 1840-1870, (also referred to as the Alumnorum Album Regula) is a handwritten, bound ledger listing students enrolled in coursework during the sessions 1840-1841 through 1869-1870. The ledger includes pages with columns for name, parent or guardian, residence, date of entrance, rank (day or boarder), age, religion, department, and remarks. The registry also includes the college's schedule, curriculum, rules, and expectations of both boarders and day scholars. Many of the student names also appear in the Catalogue of Students published annually in the college's course catalogs, but not all.
