Description

  • Jennifer Gregory, Technical Services Manager, Boone County Public Library

In 2008 the Local History Department of the Boone County Public Library made a decision to begin moving from largely print-based materials and methods to primarily digital resources and online services. As part of this, a wide-scale digitization project was initiated. The end result saw over 20,000 digital assets available through the library’s catalog, with another 92,000 waiting to go online. Unfortunately, adequate cataloging provisions were not made at the time. During the library’s recent ILS migration, cataloging issues, especially the subject headings, became a barrier to migrating local history’s digital content. The solution lay in the creation of a subject thesaurus which was tailored to the needs of BCPL, but could also be expanded for use by other libraries across the state.
