Abstract

Breaking the Stereotypes and Integrating Male Nurses into Forensic Evidence Collection

Sexual assault is one of the major crimes that offers forensic nurses the ability to care for victims and examine them for evidence collection. Bringing forth a diversity of staff at forensic evidence collection increases victims' comfort when interacting with male forensic examiners and increases the overall quality of forensic nursing. This project aims to diversify the staff at forensic collection, increase victims' comfort when interacting with male forensic examiners, and increase the overall quality of forensic nursing. It is necessary to embrace male forensic nurses in medical facilities because they enhance gender equality and balance in these medical facilities. Not to exclude the rationale behind addressing this gender imbalance in forensic nursing is the rise in gender equality and diversity in the workplaces, including the medical field. The healthcare setting embraces diversity by offering equal working opportunities to all genders in various departments. This element ensures that all patients' genders are represented, and they feel confident, safe, and secure when seeking medical attention. With several studies on the importance of male Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs), the findings will display that it is possible to break the stereotype around male nurses in the forensic collection. However, this would require IRB approval due to the sensitive nature of the subject, and potential harm. The participants will sign consent forms to ensure the project follows all ethical considerations. The evaluation process will entail analyzing data from participants' responses before and after applying the strategies to determine their effectiveness and the type of change experienced by the organization's male nurses. This project follows an equality, diversity, and inclusion framework, which focuses on enhancing fairness and equal opportunities in the workplace. Finally, the findings will display that it is possible to break the stereotype around male nurses in the forensic collection. This project achieved its objectives while aligning with this major hospital's mission and vision.
