Abstract
This article investigates the importance of professional and technical writing in preparing students for the workplace. Utilizing research studies, survey data, interviews, and existing scholarship, it explores how higher education can better equip students with the writing skills needed for professional success. This presentation also considers examples of university programs, including one at Xavier University, to evaluate how institutions are currently addressing this need. Additionally, it incorporates personal perspectives from current students and recent graduates in the workforce to better understand how being knowledgeable in professional and technical writing may have changed over time. By compiling research and lived experience, the presentation highlights the challenges students may face when lacking confidence or experience in these forms of writing and emphasizes the value of more intentional preparation in higher education.
