Abstract

This project examines the impact that having a strong or weak sense of belonging can have on student motivation, participation, and confidence. More specifically, this study explores how past experiences of belonging can impact student participation and confidence in future collaborative writing groups. I also examine if student perception of the importance of collaboration and writing skills in their degree or career field have any impact on their level of participation and confidence in collaborative writing class assignments. It is important to know how students’ past negative or positive experiences with group belonging can influence their participation in future collaboration and impact confidence in their ability to work well in groups. To investigate this relationship, I will be using an online survey written for this project and taken by university students. I will also be establishing the context of this research by referencing public data about students' sense of belonging and engagement collected by the NSSE. As a whole, I expect this research to contribute to better understanding how to support long term student confidence in collaborative writing skills and support student wellbeing and motivation by focusing on the foundational importance that belonging has in learning.
