Abstract

Companions on a Journey (COJ) provides grief support services to students in seventy public, private, and parochial schools across the Cincinnati area, offering monthly grief support groups. Attendance in COJ's school-based grief support groups, particularly among high school students, often fluctuates throughout the year. Some students participate consistently, while others discontinue their involvement after only a few meetings. This study aims to explore the factors that influence high school students' decisions to join and maintain participation in COJ's school-based grief support groups. The research will focus on identifying the key motivations for enrollment and continued engagement in the program. Data will be collected through a survey distributed to current high school participants in COJ’s grief support groups. The survey will gather demographic data and assess students' reasons for joining, the significance of various engagement factors, and the aspects of the group experience that promote sustained participation. The results of this study will provide valuable insights to inform COJ's outreach strategies, improve group attendance, and guide program development.
