Exploring the use of plant extracts as alternative inhibitors against metal corrosion

Abstract

Corrosion inhibitors have long been in use to prevent corrosion & rusting on steel equipment and instruments. Although effective, traditional corrosion inhibitors typically contain toxic substances that can be harmful to the environment, especially when using in large quantities. Therefore, the use of safe plant extracts and additives as corrosion inhibitors are of interest. There have been reports about several fruit and vegetable extracts as promising corrosion inhibitors when applied to steel. Our research focuses on potential natural corrosion inhibitors and includes a summary from literature search as well as the laboratory testing of crude aqueous extracts of some vegetables and fruits to investigate their ability in preventing metal corrosion in HCl and NaCl mediums. Techniques such as ICP-AES and AFM were also explored for use in the study.
