Abstract
Borderline Personality Disorder is commonly diagnosed among clients within mental health agencies. Research represents a broad relationship between trauma history and individuals with a borderline personality disorder diagnosis (BPD). This exploratory study aims to examine whether or not there are commonalities between the trauma history of Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health (GCBHS) clients with BPD compared to clients with other mental health diagnoses. Secondary agency data provided by the quality management team at GCBHS and client chart review, were used to interpret the patterns of trauma among clients with BPD compared to those with other diagnoses. The in-depth chart review was necessary to evaluate client responses to the Ohio Consumer Outcome survey, which provided the specific trauma symptom data needed for the analysis. This study included 20 individuals which were currently enrolled in services at GCBHS in Hamilton County. 10 subjects who met the criteria for BPD diagnosis and a reported trauma history were sampled using the non-probability purposive sampling design. The remaining 10 did not meet the diagnosis criteria for BPD and were selected using random sampling. Exploring these potential relationships between trauma and BPD diagnosis can inform interventions and trauma informed care strategies to align more with client needs and improve the outcome results for these vulnerable populations served within mental health agencies.
