Abstract

As the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II approaches, my research focuses on Xavier University’s World War II veterans. I researched the lives of 16 veterans and co-curated an exhibit that is displayed on the 3rd floor of Xavier’s library. The exhibit uses primary sources including student newsletters, admissions pamphlets, and a scrapbook to explore the effects of World War II on Xavier. Such effects include changes in enrollment, the physical landscape of the university, and, most importantly, the implementation of the 30th College Training Detachment, a federal military contract program which Xavier signed with the U.S. Armed Forces to both train and educate military men on the university’s campus during the war.
