Portrait of James J. McCabe, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1917-1923. Photograph dated approximately 1923.

Biographical Information

Twenty-third Jesuit president Rev. James J. McCabe was born March 1858 in Ireland and arrived in America in 1866. He was a graduate of Xavier University (then known as St. Xavier College), Cincinnati, Ohio. Prior to his term at Xavier University he served as president of University of Detroit, Detroit, Michigan, St. Mary’s College, St. Mary’s, Kansas, and Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he pioneered the inclusion of women in 1909. While at Xavier he began construction on the Avondale property (1919) and admitted women into the Teacher’s College and School of Commerce. He died in 1933.
