Abstract
This paper will explore the topic of fanfiction and whether or not it can be categorized as literature. I would like to explore whether it is already considered to be literature and if it could ever be constituted as literature. Fanfiction is a popular form of writing that many people engage with. Many people read and write fanfiction, and some are just as well-written, if not more well-written than the media they derive from. However, fanfiction seems to have a stigma against it. I am exploring whether people could consider fanfiction to be literature with these existing prejudices. To investigate this issue, I am utilizing a survey asking people about their reading habits and opinions on fanfiction. I will also use other sources that discuss fanfiction and its features and sometimes its literariness. At this stage, I expect the project to show that some fanfiction is considered to be literature and that people could potentially view fanfiction as literature. Overall, I believe this research contributes to the question of what constitutes as literature. It may reveal bias towards certain writings because they are labeled in a certain way.
