Creative Writing: Useful Beyond the Classroom or Best Left Within It?
Start Date

Abstract
This project examines creative writing, the skills learned through it, and whether those skills are useful. More specifically, it focuses on whether or not it is possible to transfer those skills outside of the classroom. Through secondary research, a survey, and interview, I have investigated my own experience of creative writing as a helpful tool for expression and the exploration of identity to see if others share this experience and acknowledge the value of creative writing skills beyond the classroom. This topic matters because creative writing allows people to think of situations differently. I found creative writing to be helpful with expression and the exploration of identity. To investigate this issue I found articles and created a survey asking these questions. I will also interview a faculty member at Xavier to ask them similar questions. Overall, this research contributes to understanding if the skills learned in creative writing are applicable outside the classroom and if they should be.
