Abstract

There is very little published research on grief symptoms and reactions, especially in kids and teenagers. This is in part because grief is such a complicated emotion and experience. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to see if high schoolers who are grieving experience symptoms of anxiety and if these possible symptoms were experienced before or after the loss of their loved one. Specifically, this study will be looking into whether teenagers who are experiencing grief and are in Companions on a Journey’s Grief support groups are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, and if these symptoms were more prevalent after their loved one died. All of the participants in this study were high schoolers in Companion on a Journey’s Grief support groups. A survey was administered to collect this data. The survey questions were made based on symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder per the Mayo Clinic. The sample size is twenty participants who completed the survey who attend Hamilton High School, Hamilton Freshman, and Archbishop Carroll High School. Through this research, more can be learned about the possible interconnected symptoms of anxiety and grief. This research can also help give more information on teenagers who are grieving by diving deeper into what they are experiencing and if there are any patterns in their anxiety and grief.
