Abstract

The area surrounding challenged and banned books is every growing and ever more difficult to understand. Every year, more and more books are being challenged or fully banned and there is becoming less and less that we can do about it, except for understanding and educating. This paper looks into the understanding of book bans by undergraduate college students and their beliefs towards whether banning books is beneficial or detrimental to their education. In the introduction and background, I mention the history of book bans and then go into my own research on peoples understandings and beliefs of banned books. The results of the study show that many undergraduate students believe that book bans are detrimental to student learning but have a wide variety of beliefs as to what the main reasons books are being banned for.
