Abstract

During this year’s Xavier Men’s Basketball season, Xavier would lose a hard-fought game to Providence at home. Xavier’s head coach Sean Miller received a technical foul that he believed was unprecedented and would let the press know in his postgame interview. He talked about how he believed he should not have received the technical for what little he said. He went on to say that he believes there is a tier system in coaching, claiming that some coaches get more technical fouls than others, due to how much they win or lose, or their past success. He believes that some coaches would not have gotten a technical if they said what he said, but he was assessed a technical for it. After hearing that, I decided to look into his claim, and discover if there truly is a tier system within the coaches, specifically in the Big East Conference. My data consists of every technical foul by a coach or player for every team in each Big East Conference game during the 2022-23 season. The dataset also consists of which coach was home or away, the final score of the game, the date, and the opponent for the game. The goal is to not only see if there truly is a tier system for coaches in the Big East, but also see if there are any other similarities between technical fouls and wins, losses, or whether the team is home or away.
