Portrait of Francis Heiermann, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1911-1917. photograph dated approximately 1917.

Biographical Information

Twenty-second Jesuit president Rev. Francis Heiermann was born October 10, 1860 in Westphalia, Germany. His early studies took place in Holland where he entered the Society of Jesus in 1878. He arrived in America in 1885 but pursued his theological studies at Ditton Hall, England where he was ordained August 28, 1892. He served as president of St. John’s University, Toledo, Ohio prior to his term at Xavier University (then known as St. Xavier College). While at Xavier he purchased the Avondale property. He retired to West Baden College, Orange County, Indiana in August 1943 where he died March 2, 1944. (Source: Xaverian News, January 1917; Orange County, Indiana Obituaries)
