Description

Portrait of Hubert F. Brockman, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1923-1931. Photographs dated approximately 1930.

Biographical Information

Twenty-fourth Jesuit president Rev. Hubert F. Brockman was born March 8, 1877 in Cincinnati, Ohio. An alumnus of Xavier University (then known as St. Xavier College), he received his MA from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri and Doctor of Laws at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He entered the Society of Jesus at Florissant, Missouri September 5, 1896. During his term at Xavier Elet Hall, the library, and Bellarmine chapel were built; the Union House remodeled; the stadium campaign initiated; the name was changed from St. Xavier College to Xavier University; and the liberal arts, teachers, and commerce colleges expanded. He died February 12, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was buried at Novitiate Cemetery in Milford, Ohio. (Source: Xaverian News, February 1931)
