Portrait of Robert W. Mulligan, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1972-1982. Photograph dated approximately 1982.

Biographical Information

Thirtieth Jesuit president Rev. Robert W. Mulligan was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1917. He received his BA degree from Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois. He entered the Society of Jesus at Milford, Ohio in 1937 and continued his studies at West Baden College, Indiana and the University of Detroit, Detroit, Michigan. After his ordination in 1949 he completed a PhD at Louvain University, Belgium and post-doctoral studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. He died June 14, 2001 in Maywood, Illinois.
