Abstract
Standardization of Medicolegal Death Investigation through Shared Electronic Death Investigation Records
Peter Marquardt BSN, RN
There is currently a lack of standardization and interoperability of information and data collected during a death investigation. This project examines the healthcare opportunity for standardization of medicolegal death investigation through the utilization of a shared electronic death investigation record while also applying a standardized investigative template to collect information. There is a significant amount of information collected during a death investigation and to combat inconsistent investigation, documentation, and information sharing, death investigation records need to be accessible by medicolegal death investigation offices and pertinent external organizations. This project developed a standardized investigative templet that death investigators can utilize while on scene and information collected using the templet can then be entered into the electronic death investigation record. Outcomes of this project will be measured by completing surveys and interviews with medicolegal death investigators and pertinent stakeholders to assess preferred format and electronic record. A standardized electronic death investigation record promotes consistent documentation and enables stakeholders to access and share information simultaneously. This project will assess the efficiency and timeliness of death record processing, data accuracy, access to information, and data exchange between stakeholders. A standardized electronic death investigation record throughout Illinois will improve death investigator assessment and documentation, advance interoperability of information between stakeholders, and improve collaboration between external organizations.
