Abstract

Implementing a Standardized Approach to Increase Nursing Student Engagement in Simulation
Abstract

Nursing programs are utilizing simulation experiences at an increased rate to satisfy the required clinical hours and accommodate the shortages in clinical partnerships available for student placement. Simulation can be effective as an alternative clinical experience but requires that students are engaged; therefore, increasing student engagement is critical to the experience and learning success. The literature clearly supports the use of simulation in nursing education but also confirms issues with student engagement. The purpose of this project was to address student engagement in simulation in a pre-licensure Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program in the Midwest. Specifically, the project incorporated the use of a simulation rubric, standardized prebriefing, and a debriefing session to increase student engagement in simulation experiences. These strategies correlate with recommendations from the literature and the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL). The project will be evaluated with a post-simulation survey completed by students and rubric points assigned by faculty in the category evaluating participation. If the project is determined to be effective, it will be expanded to include additional program locations, and the same strategies will be implemented to increase student engagement in simulation.
