Abstract

On March 26th, 2025, a bill that would dismantle DEI programs in public universities was passed in Ohio. This decision is reflective of Trump's orders to dismantle DEI programs in his first week of office and is affecting many institutions across the country. Inspired by these recent developments, my project addresses perceptions of academic freedom in the US. My population are students and teachers in high school and college settings. My research is guided by two questions: 1) What is the current perception of academic freedom among students and teachers within the US? and 2) Is there any difference in perceptions of academic freedom in public schools versus private schools? Data for this project is gathered via survey using quantitative and qualitative means from participants in both public and private institutions to ascertain the perceptions of teachers and students in those settings.
