Abstract
Every day, children go into the foster care system with various forms of trauma. Many child welfare agencies use trauma-informed care in order to understand and recognize, promote healing, provide support, and much more. This form of care is evidence-based and defines forms of trauma such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, and loss/separation. The Life Incidence of Traumatic Events (LITE) assessment is a survey used by the child welfare agency– Focus on Youth– to measure the different kinds of and how much trauma every foster youth comes into care. Each year, Focus on Youth employees analyze the data from the LITE assessments in order to assess how to properly use trauma-informed care when helping their clients. By doing so, they are able to provide necessary support, guidance, and resources to help the foster children succeed and improve their lives. In this descriptive research study, results from the last five years (2020-2024) were collected in order to describe the kinds of trauma foster children at Focus on Youth face.
